Which Type of Roof Keeps Buildings the Coolest

Insulation and a good air conditioning system isn’t the only thing you need if you want to keep your building cool. If you’re interested in keeping your property as cool as possible at a low cost, you may want to consider looking into various roofing options. Roofs that are thermally reflective and properly insulated will be far more energy efficient.  shutterstock_161957117

Roofs Made of Thermally Reflective Material

Thermally reflective roofs will bounce heat away from the building, thereby decreasing the temperature of the building itself. A thermally reflective roof is designed with a special material that prevents heat absorption. However, there are also reflective coatings that can be used with ordinary roofs. These coatings are applied just like paint onto a flat roof surface and reflect UV radiation. Many of these coatings will also protect asphalt from breaking down.

Roofs With Additional Insulation

Proper roof insulation is one of the major contributors to temperature regulation. A thicker roof installation will keep cool air in and warm air out; not only will it keep you cool in the summers, but it will also keep you warm during the winter The thickness of the insulation depends on the type of material. Common roofing insulation materials include wood fiber, perlite, cellular glass and gypsum board. The roof insulation also needs to be properly installed and secured to ensure that there are no gaps for proper temperature retention.

Roofs With Build-Ups

If you have an asphalt roof you can consider a build-up to lower the temperature of your property. A build-up involves light colored material such as white gravel, which will naturally reflect both light and heat. Darker materials such as black asphalt or dark gray materials will absorb heat and thus won’t be productive for keeping a building cool.

Unpainted Metal Roofs

Unpainted metal roofing is one of the least expensive options for those that want to keep a building cool at a low cost. An unpainted metal roof will usually be fairly reflective by nature and will insulate quite well. Even better, it’s very easy to install and extremely affordable.

If you want to compare different options, you can look at Energy Star ratings. Energy Star ratings are highly respected ratings designed to reflect how energy efficient a roof is.
